At the Or, Carter uses the gallery as artifact and sculptural material, and his transformative work questions the gallery’s status as both neutral backdrop and passive environment. To this day contemporary art galleries employ an endlessly modified but rarely abandoned architectural model of a white cube. Carter’s work directs us toward this, and uses this history to create an intrusive and exciting installation.
