Or Gallery

The Or Gallery is an artist-run centre committed to exhibiting work by local, national, and international artists whose art practice is of a critical, conceptual and/or interdisciplinary nature. We would also like to thank our current and past interns – Sophie Busby, Claire Hasko-Young, Bee A. Park, Joomi Seo, Erica Shiozaki, and Yi Xin Tong for their research and and assistance in developing our extensive online archive.

Submission Guidelines

Since its very beginnings, the Or Gallery has hired artists and curators to serve limited terms as Director/Curator and lead the gallery’s programming. This allows the Curator to build a cohesive program of exhibitions according to their particular approach and concerns, while attending to the Or Gallery’s mandate to support work of a critical, conceptual and/or interdisciplinary nature.

Due to this programming structure, very few projects are selected from the submissions process. However, with the recent move to our new location at 236 East Pender Street, additional opportunities are available for showing artists’ work outside of our regular exhibition program. These include the discursive spaces of the bookstore and our storefront windows.

Even if a submission cannot be accommodated immediately, it is an excellent way to introduce your practice or project to the curatorial team, who may wish to follow up with a studio visit. We appreciate the opportunity to learn about you and your work and thank you for taking time to share with us.

Submission Requirements

To better focus the submissions process for the future, we are now introducing a submission window, after which submissions for the current period will be collectively reviewed by the gallery curatorial staff. The current window is June 1 – July 31 2021. Please submit proposals using the google form. Only proposals selected for follow up will be contacted.

To make a submission, please include:
*A current artist or curator biography describing previous projects, exhibitions, and experience, and/or the context in which you make your work. (1 page)
*A statement of intent framing your practice and/or project and how it connects to the Or Gallery context and mandate. (1 page)
*Up to 5 relevant supporting images in JPEG format. Please include title, medium, date, and label each file, i.e 01surname.jpg
*For video and audio files, please submit a URL to an online link – 5 minutes maximum.

For questions about the sumbissions requirements or process, please contact or@orgallery.org.
