This year’s Distinguished Curatorial Mentor Su-Ying Lee will be in residence at the Historic Joy Kogawa House (HJKH) throughout November and will develop and conduct mentoring sessions with Or Gallery for a limited number of local curators and creatives in the process of professionalizing their practice.

With host artist, writer, and curator Christian Vistan, the most-recent resident of the Historic Joy Kogawa House.

Su-Ying Lee is an independent curator and has also worked in institutions (MOCCA Toronto, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery and Art Gallery of Mississauga). She has curated exhibitions across Canada and in Hong Kong, Mexico City, and Quezon City (Metro Manila, Philippines). She is a settler in Toronto/Tkaronto/Taranton/Gichi Kiiwenging (Treaty 13), the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River.

She’ll be speaking about financial sustainability in independent practice, selected previous projects, and her current research relating plantation agriculture to processes of racialization and de-personification.

This curatorial talk supports our annual partnership with HJKH. For the second year running, Or Gallery has partnered with HJKH to invite an established curator, with lived experience as a member of a BIPOC community, for a month-long residency in Vancouver.
